Heat Pump Weather Compensation: What It Is, How It Works & Why It Matters
Understand how weather compensation helps your heat pump run smoother, cheaper and more comfortably all year round.

If you have a heat pump and keep hearing terms like weather compensation or heating curve, you are not alone. Getting to grips with this feature can make your home more comfortable and often cut your running costs too.
What weather compensation actually does
Weather compensation is a control strategy that tells your heat pump how hot the heating water needs to be, based on the temperature outside. Instead of always heating to one fixed flow temperature, the system gently adjusts as the weather changes.
On colder days, the heat pump increases the flow temperature so your radiators or underfloor heating give out more heat. On milder days, it lowers the flow temperature so the system does not overheat the house or waste energy.
This relationship between outdoor temperature and target flow temperature is often called the heating curve. Getting this curve roughly right for your home is one of the keys to a quiet, steady and efficient heat pump.
How outside temperature affects flow temperature
Your installer will usually set a starting heating curve that suits your heat pump, emitters and property type. The control then checks the outdoor sensor and chooses a flow temperature from that curve.
For example, on a cold day at 0°C outside, your system might aim for a flow of around 45–50°C. On a mild day at 10°C outside, it might only need 30–35°C. The idea is that your rooms stay at roughly the same indoor temperature while the water temperature quietly adapts in the background.
Lower flow temperatures are where heat pumps are most efficient. So running cooler water on mild days, instead of blasting very hot water for short periods, usually means lower bills and less wear on the system.

Better efficiency: lower flow temperatures when the weather allows.
Quieter operation: less need for full-power starts and stops.
Longer life: reduced stress on components from constant ramping up and down.
Heat pumps prefer to run steadily, not in blasts
Gas or oil boilers are often run to “blast” heat into the system, then switch off until the house cools down. Heat pumps work differently. They are designed to run for long, gentle cycles, keeping your home at a stable temperature.
Short, sharp bursts of heat usually lead to higher flow temperatures and frequent starts and stops, which are both bad for efficiency. With a well-set heating curve, your heat pump can tick along quietly, avoiding big peaks and troughs, and keeping you comfortable around the clock.
Signs your heating curve may need tweaking
Even a well-installed system might need fine-tuning after you have lived with it for a while. Some common clues that your weather compensation settings are not quite right include:
Overheating on mild days: rooms feel too warm, radiators are hotter than they need to be, and you find yourself opening windows.
Struggling in cold snaps: the house never quite reaches your set temperature when it is very cold outside.
Short cycling: the heat pump starts and stops frequently instead of running in long, steady cycles.
Rooms lagging behind: some spaces are consistently cooler, especially at the ends of circuits or with larger radiators.
These issues do not always mean the heat pump is undersized or faulty. Often the shape or slope of the heating curve simply needs adjusting so the flow temperature rises enough in cold weather and drops enough in mild weather.
Simple checklist before speaking to your installer or engineer
If you think your weather compensation could be better, gather a few details before contacting your installer or engineer. This helps them diagnose and optimise more quickly, either remotely or on a visit.
Make a note of:
1. Current control settings
Write down your current room thermostat settings, any schedule times, and what the controller calls the heating curve or weather compensation level. If your system shows flow and return temperatures or outdoor temperature, those readings are useful too.
2. House type and insulation
Note whether your property is a flat, terrace, semi-detached or detached, and roughly when it was built. Mention any upgrades such as cavity wall insulation, external wall insulation, recent double or triple glazing, or extra loft insulation.
3. Radiators and underfloor heating
Explain which rooms have radiators, which (if any) have underfloor heating, and whether they run on separate circuits or the same one. If some radiators have been turned off permanently, mention that as it can affect flow.
4. Your preferred indoor temperatures
Be clear about what temperatures you want in lived-in rooms and bedrooms, and when you are normally at home. A realistic target, maintained steadily, usually works better with a heat pump than big daytime setbacks.
Common myths about controls and comfort
Myth: constantly changing the thermostat helps
With a boiler, some people are used to turning the thermostat up and down several times a day. With a heat pump and weather compensation, that habit often backfires. Large and frequent changes force the system to raise flow temperatures and can push it into less efficient, stop-start operation.
It is usually better to choose a comfortable set-point and let the heating curve do the fine work of matching heat output to the outdoor conditions. Small seasonal tweaks are fine, but hourly fiddling tends to make the system work harder for no real gain.
Myth: “eco mode” is always the best option
Many controls offer an eco setting, but it does not always mean “cheapest to run”. In some systems it simply reduces flow temperature too far or adds aggressive temperature setbacks that make the heat pump struggle to catch up later.
If eco mode leaves your home cool and forces you to keep turning the thermostat up, you are unlikely to save energy overall. A well-tuned heating curve, moderate room temperature and steady operation often beat a poorly suited eco preset.
Myth: zoned controls always save more
Zoned heating, with different room thermostats and motorised valves, sounds ideal. However, if too many zones shut off while the heat pump is still trying to run, water flow can drop and the unit may start cycling on and off.
If you have multiple zones, aim to keep main living areas on similar temperatures and schedules where possible. Your installer or engineer can often adjust pump speeds, bypasses and control logic so that zoning works with the heat pump, not against it.
